Carl M. "Chuck" Mathison Jr., age 65, passed away suddenly on Wednesday November 19, 2014. Chuck was born in Tallahassee, FL and was the son of the late Carl and Sarah "Sally" Mathison, who both preceded him in death. Chuck was a long time resident of Maggie Valley, NC and Singer Island, FL and enjoyed all of the benefits of North Carolina summers in the mountains and Florida winters at the beach. Chuck was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in North Palm Beach, FL and attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Waynesville, NC. While Chuck was born in Tallahassee, FL, his allegiance was always to the University of Florida. Chuck received an undergraduate degree from the university and was a longtime supporter of the school, including being a former Bull Gator. Anyone that knows him knew he believed that the University of Florida was the flagship football program in the state of Florida, he was certain that Steve Spurrier was a better coach than Bobby Bowden, and always loved game day at "The Swamp". Following his undergraduate degree at the University of Florida, Chuck received a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of Miami and practiced law for 35 years. He tirelessly served his clients with the highest degree of ethics, compassion, dedication, and professionalism and was devoted to public service and to the public good. In addition to the dedication to his clients, Chuck also believed it was important to serve his community and was a member of and served as a past president of The Palm Beach County Bar Association and was an active supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of West Palm Beach and numerous other charitable organizations. Chuck is survived by his wife of 25 years Barbara C. Mathison; a daughter, Tiffany W. Conner (Joe), of Richmond, VA; a son, Trevor L. Wingate of Maggie Valley, NC; grandchildren, Joseph H. Conner IV and Wesley J. Conner of Richmond, VA; three sisters, Jan Cook (Gary) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Sheri Morelli (Rob) of Memphis, TN and Susan Rotne of West Palm Beach, FL; a brother, Stephen "Steve" Mathison (Deb) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; nieces and nephews, Kristen and Kevin Cook, Robby and Savannah Morelli, Samantha and Paige Rotne, and Ian Mathison. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at St John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Christopher Riehl officiating. Graveside service and burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery in Waynesville. Following the service, the family is welcoming guests for a celebration of Chuck's life at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Ballenisles Country Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4819 Park Road, Suite C, Charlotte, NC or to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 10000, Department 300, Memphis, TN 38148.
