Carl Ratcliffe

April 17, 1914 — May 21, 2011

Waynesville, Carl Roger Ratcliffe, Sr., age 97, of Shelton Street, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Haywood Lodge and Retirement Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Robert Edward Lee Ratcliffe and Callie Moody Ratcliffe. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Belle Franklin Ratcliffe, who died in 1980; seven sisters; and five brothers. Ratcliffe Cove where he grew up was named after his grandfather. In 1937, he graduated from Western Carolina University with the first Master's Graduating Class and was inducted into the Western Carolina University Sports Hall of Fame. He was a veteran and served as a Staff Sergeant in the US Army during World War II. He retired as principal in 1978 after serving 42 years with the Haywood County School System. He is survived by his son, Carl Ratcliffe, Jr. of Canton, Georgia; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles officiating. Private family inurnment will be at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the church.
