Carl Setzer

Waynesville-Carl "June" Asbury Setzer, age 89, went home to be with our Lord on Monday, June 18, 2007 at Harris Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness. He was born on September 8, 1917 in Maggie Valley and was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Alfred Setzer and Jessie Pearl Bradley Setzer; his first wife, Martha Moody Setzer of Maggie Valley; four brothers, Hayes, Joe, Jack, and Gilmer Setzer. He was a US Army veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific. He was the first commander of VFW Post 5202 in Waynesville and was a member of American Legion Post 47. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member for 50 years. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Maggie and was instrumental in securing water service to Maggie Valley. After returning from military service, he worked for a brief time at Champion International. He was a former truant officer for Haywood County, served in the Sheriff's Department under Fred Campbell, and was a former member of the Waynesville Police Department. He continued his service as Haywood County's Tax Collector for 26 years before retiring in 1985. He was a past president of the State of NC Tax Collectors Association and received many honors. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. "June" loved his Lord, his family, and his country. He was very active in the Methodist Church until his sickness. He served as Trustee, Lay Leader, Finance Officer, and anywhere else he was needed in the church. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Martha June Cogburn Setzer; two daughters, Sandra S. Morris and husband, Kenneth "Bud" Morris of Waynesville, and Judy S. Wiltin and husband, Steve Wiltin of Acworth, GA; a stepdaughter, Susan S. Eberhardt and husband, Dennis Eberhardt, Jr., of Waynesville; two stepsons, Ret. Col. James V. Smith, Jr. and wife, Carol, of Gulf Shore, AL, and Mike W. Smith and wife, Betsy, of Signal Mountain, TN; four grandchildren, Brandi Morris Wheeler and husband, Mike, of Manning, SC, Steven Alexander Wiltin and wife Jeanne, of Cartersville, GA, Brian Anthony Wiltin of Denver, CO and Nicholas Carl Joseph Wiltin of Myrtle Beach, SC; five stepgrandchildren, Mike W. Smith, Jr., of Signal Mountain, TN, Nicole Thompson of Jacksonville, FL, Amanda Long of Columbia, SC, Deidra Hennacey of Spartanburg, SC, and Hope Cole Yerger Mabry of Edinborough, Scotland, UK; and one aunt, Hattie Kate Caldwell, of Maggie Valley. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2007 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells and Reverend Grady Barringer officiating. Hallett S. Ward will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. Additionally Masonic services will be conducted by the Waynesville Masonic Lodge 259 AF&AM. The Lodge will open at 9:30 a.m. The family will receive friends from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Alex, Brian, and Nick Wiltin, Steele Morris, Michael Smith, Thomas Howell, and Don Blalock. Honorary pallbearers will be John Carver, Tom Alexander, Gil Henry, Carl Ratcliff, Dr. A. Heyward Smith, Sam McCrary, Bob Ferguson, Tommy Churchwell, Dr. Jack Dickerson, Dr. Guy Abbate, Johnny Phillips, David Haynes, Hallet S. Ward, Jr., Burt Smith, Bill George, Paul George, Glen W. Brown, Larry Ammons, Hugh Williams, Michael Jordan, Bill McCord, Jim Winfree, Bud Lowe, Gaven Brown, Francis Williams, Ruby Bryson, Nancy Crawford, and Evelyn Cooper. Memorials may be given to Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565, or First United Methodist Church of Waynesville for missions, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786.
