"1931-2015" Canton- Carleson "Red" Herman Hipps, age 83, passed away on Friday, February 6, 2015 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Mailey Kermy and Addie Katherine Plemmons Hipps. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Myron Stephen Hipps and a sister Katherine Hipps Medford. Carleson attended Canton High School, where he went on to further his education and received a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Arts from Western Carolina University. He served in the National Guard for two years then later went into the United States Air Force to serve his country and gave four years of service. He was an employee of Champion International for two years and of American Enka for six years. Then he received a Master's in Education from Western Carolina University in 1969 and became a teacher for Haywood County Schools where he taught for twenty-one years. What he enjoyed most in life was his family, farming, golfing, and racing. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was an avid farmer. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Sarah Lee Clark Hipps; a daughter, Teresa Clark and her husband, Terry, of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Katie Hipps of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Christopher Clark, Brittany Crook, Jacob Hipps and Joshua Hipps; a brother Philip Hipps; and a sister Gail Shope and her husband, James. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 9, 2015 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Keith Clark officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Calvary Baptist, 23 Phillips Street, Canton, NC 28716.
