Carol W. McCurry, 88, of Carolina Mountain Dr. died on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Mission Hospital.
He was born in Weaverville to the late William Troy McCurry and Ethel Lucille McBee McCurry and was preceded in death by sisters Vera Rector, Velma McCurry and a brother Ray McCurry. Survivors include his wife Mattiewood Warren McCurry, a son, Dan, a daughter, Louise and two grandsons Robert and Andrew McCurry all of Chicago, Illinois. Also surviving are two sisters Ernestine Mandeville and Margaret Shuford and a brother A.C. McCurry.
A life long resident of Buncombe County, Carol was a member of Hominy Baptist Church. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a life time member of Hominy Lodge #491 and a Shriner.
A decorated Navy veteran of WWII, Carol was a Pearl Harbor survivor and served as a Chief Quartermaster throughout the Pacific Campaign. He served as an Instructor at the Asheville Naval Reserve Training Center in seamanship and navigation for 15 years before enlisting in the US Coast Guard for another duty tour until retiring in 1962.
Carol served as Commander of VFW Post #891 and as VFW District Commander. He was a life time member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Fleet Reserve Association and AMVETS. With his wife, Carol gave several thousand hours of volunteer service at the local VA hospital.
Throughout his employment at the American Enka Corp, Carol was a strong member of the United Textile Workers Union #2598 holding several elected positions. He was an equally faithful worker for the Democratic Party at several levels including a race for a seat on the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.
Raised a farmer Carol continued the tradition of prize winning corn at the Buncombe County Fair and his work with the county's Community Development Clubs won top honors for several years. This included the initial organizing of what is now the three-station Candler Fire Department. He was an active member of the N.C. Beekeepers Association.
Following the early onset of Alzheimers, Carol became a day member of the Mountain Care community of the CarePartners Health Service. For over thirteen years Mountain Care staffs were family to Carol. Their constant support was an essential part of both his life and that of his family.
The McCurrys will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, November 11 at Hominy Baptist Church with services to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 12 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with full military and Masonic honors. Officiating will be Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton and Rev. Dr. Dan C. McCurry.
Pallbearers will be Robert McCurry, Andrew McCurry, Franklin Redmond, A.C. McCurry, Robert Warren and Alyson Burnett.
