Waynesville, NC, Carol Keith Underwood, age 77, died Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Haywood Regional Medical Center after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was born September 3, 1930, the son of the late Frank Allen Underwood and Lucille Tate Underwood. Carol graduated from Waynesville Township High School and Western Carolina University. He retired from the Haywood County school system in 1992 where he served as a band and choral director. He was a lifelong member of Hazelwood Baptist Church and served as minister of music, deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee. He played with the Smoky Mountain Brass Band for 22 years and was currently playing with the Haywood Community Band. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Carol is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patsy Rogers Underwood; three daughters and their families, Leigh Ann and her husband, Chris Reep, of Morganton, Pam and her husband, Terry Hartnett and their daughters, Hannah and Rileigh of Charlotte, and Patty and her husband, Buddy Little and their daughter, Morgan, also of Charlotte. He is also survived by a brother, Kenneth M. Underwood of Waynesville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Hazelwood Baptist Church with the Reverend Tim Lolley and the Reverend Charles Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers will be Tommy Carswell, David Wiggins, Mark Ethridge, Jerry Tate, and Bob and Robert Dolman. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
