Carolyn Chandler Auberry passed away on May 9, 2024. She was 91 years old.
Carolyn was born in Weaverville, North Carolina on July 9, 1932. She was proud of her basketball prowess at Flat Creek and her standing in her high school graduating class of eight students. She earned her degree at Western Carolina and began working as an elementary school teacher. Although she was only formerly employed for a few years, she remained a “teacher” in essence her entire life. After her marriage to the gangly young man in the white t-shirt she met at Western, she focused on family and community as her life’s work.
Her service was evident in the many roles she took, Den Mother, Circle Leader for United Methodist Women, organizer of school and church events, and as the hostess who pulled off many dinners and gatherings as the spouse of Horace, a business executive at Wellco Enterprises. As she frequently noted, Horace was likely to bring business guests home at any time, with only a moment’s notice. She prized her ability to improvise and provide a welcoming table no matter the dietary or cultural preferences of her guests. With Horace, she traveled the world on business trips and for enlightenment, visiting many countries in South America, Europe, and Asia. She loved to tell stories of those times when she struck out on her own while Horace was in business meetings and her misadventures in foreign lands.
Carolyn loved her house on the hill that had, in her view “the very best view of Lake Junaluska.” She took great pride in her flowers and the various landscaping features that dotted her yard.
Carolyn was also proud of her large extended family of McLeans, Chandlers and Auberrys and kept in touch with as many aunts and uncles, nieces, and nephews, and as the generations wound down, first, second, third and fourth cousins, as she could. She kept a family tree in her head and loved every one of them with all her heart.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Marie Chandler and her husband, Horace Auberry. She is survived by her son Kent Auberry and his wife, Debbie Hayes and their children, Michael and Laura of Greensboro and her daughter, Chandra Auberry of Waynesville.
A memorial service will be held at Wells Funeral Home, Waynesville, NC on Monday, May 20th, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive guests prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity supporting childhood education and development, such as Donor’s Choose.
The care of Mrs. Auberry has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Waynesville
