Waynesville, Carolyn Byrd Dickens, age 66, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at The Homestead. A native of Laurens, SC, she was the daughter of the late Douglas Clinton and Mary Francis Strom Byrd. Carolyn had several careers from teaching math to coordinating Quality Circles at Union Carbide. She went back to school to receive her masters in Library Science and became a media specialist for several years. Carolyn was blessed with an amazing husband, children and grandchildren that enriched her life immensely. She was a passionate volunteer with the Emmaus Community, Projects for Hospice and Youth for Christ. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all. She was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Columbia, South Carolina, and Long's Chapel United Methodist Church at Lake Junaluska. Carolyn is survived by her husband of 32 years, Al Dickens, three daughters, Sheree Rose and her husband, Jim, of Waynesville; Loree Lam and her husband, Paul, of Raleigh, NC and Mandy Prather and her husband, Hunt, of Summerset, Kentucky; two sons, Greg Dickens and his wife, Tiffinie, of Waynesville and Wade Dickens and his wife, Lupe, of West Palm Beach, Florida; a brother, Douglas C. Byrd, Jr. of Simpsonville, South Carolina; 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and one on the way. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Timothy McConnell officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Venue at the church.
