Carroll Johnson

Canton - Carroll Eugene "Gene" Johnson, age 85, of Willis Cove Road, died Monday, October 29, 2007 at VA Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and a son of the late Lawton and Betty Whitesides Johnson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba Johnson, who died in 1995. Gene was a member of Rescue Baptist Church and lived for fishing in and around the mountains of North Carolina. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II. He is survived by his stepmother, Flora Johnson Burris of Canton; two daughters, Helen Stamey and her husband George "Buckey", of Canton and Carolyn Harris and her husband, Jerry, of Decatur, TN; one son, Phillip Johnson of Charleston, TN; one sister, Shirley Phillips and her husband, Doug, of Canton; two brothers, Charles Johnson and his wife, Hann, of Nashville, TN and Carroll Johnson and his wife, Wanda, of Spindale, NC; a special friend, Dee Johnson; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jesse Hollingsworth officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Helen Stamey. Memorials may be made to Rescue Baptist Church Building Fund, 112 Main Street, Canton, NC 28716 or to one's favorite charity.
