Cecil Medford

May 4, 1928 — June 6, 2017

Clyde, Cecil Garrett Medford, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at CarePartners Solace Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Garrett "Colonel" and Gracie Walker Medford. Cecil proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. During the Korean War, Cecil sailed on the USS Currier (DE700). Later in life, he enjoyed attending the many reunions that were held throughout the U.S. Cecil was an active volunteer within his community. He was a founding member of the Lake Junaluska Fire Department, and served as Chief for several years. As a 32nd degree Mason, Cecil was a full Member of the Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Clyde Masonic Lodge #453 AF & AM and worked tirelessly with new members leading and coaching them through the membership process. Cecil was also an honorary member of the Waynesville Lodge #259 AF & AM and the Pigeon River Lodge #386 AF & AM. He retired from Champion International with 30 years of service. He was an avid gardener, fly fisherman and craftsman. Cecil was also a member of the Pigeon River Wood Carvers. His endless energy allowed Cecil to live life to the fullest and he will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Truett Medford, who died in 1999 and a niece, Lou Ann Justice, who died in 1989. Cecil is survived by two daughters, Cecile Knox Medford, of Clyde and Debra Lynn Hawkins, of Greenville, Tennessee; one son, Gordon Garrett "Gary" Medford, and his wife, Angela, of Waynesville; one sister, Lillian Knox Howard, of Lake Junaluska; two brothers, William Lawrence Medford, of Clyde and Brooks Medford, of Lake Junaluska; four grandchildren, Lt Col Robert Cecil Hawkins, Rhonda Myers, Kevin Moore, and Skyler Medford; and five great-grandchildren, Tanner Myers, Sophia Hawkins, Evin Moore, Harper Myers, and Robert Hawkins. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Chris Westmoreland, Reverend Tim McConnell, and Reverend John Ferree officiating. Burial will follow at Dawn Memory Gardens with military rites provided by the United States Navy. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Venue.
