Charles Birchfield

Waynesville, Charles Lee Birchfield, age 70, of 236 Boyd Avenue, died on Monday, August 10, 2009 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Swain County, he had lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Willie L. and Helen Mae Laney Birchfield and was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Birchfield. He was a US Army veteran and was a member of the local VFW and American Legion Chapters. Charles was a self-employed heavy equipment operator who was devoted to his work. He was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He attended East Waynesville Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Jean Pressley Birchfield; two daughters, Darlene Lowe and her husband, Marty, and Lisa Burgin and her husband, Boyd, of Waynesville; three brothers, Frank Birchfield and his wife, Evelyn, of Candler, and William E. Birchfield, Carroll Birchfield and his wife, Jean, and Ernest Birchfield and his wife, Kathleen, also of Waynesville; two sisters, Linda Warren and her husband, Terry, and Norma Kerby and her husband, Rick, of Waynesville; a sister-in-law, Betty Ann Birchfield, three grandchildren, Mekenzie and Tyler Lowe and Maloree Burgin; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2009 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Josh Walls officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military graveside honors conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Birchfield, Blake and Brett Kerby, Darrell Pressley, Matt Pressel, Brandon Green, Richard Owens, and Eldon Adamson.
