Charles Brucia

July 12, 1941 — December 16, 2013

Waynesville, Charles Lawrence Brucia, age 72, lost his courageous battle with prostate cancer on December 16, 2013 at the VA Medical Hospice Center of Asheville. He was a native and 53-year resident of Long Island, New York before moving to North Carolina. He was the son of the late Benedict Anthony and Marion Blasso Brucia and was also preceded in death by a sister and two brothers. Charles served in the US Army and was a member of Local 25 IBEW Union in Long Island, New York for more than 30 years and a member of the Holy Name Society of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Long Island. Charles spent his career as an electrician but also impacted the lives of many children who played youth football. He also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity while living in Morehead City and the Open Door Soup Kitchen in Waynesville until his sickness kept him away. He had a special fondness for everyone he met and always had a special spot in his heart for Sal Stingo and Chris Parkin of Long Island, New York and Faryn Cloey and Kimberly Johnson in North Carolina. He will surely be missed by everyone who crossed his path, especially his four-legged family, Ralph, Norton, and Trixie. His suffering is over and ours is just beginning. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Loretta Catalano Brucia; three sons, Nicholas Charles Brucia, Dominic Charles Brucia, Vincent Charles Brucia, all of California; and sister, Rosie, of New York; three brothers, Benedict and James of New York and Joseph of North Carolina; brother-in-law, Daniel Catalano and wife, Karen; and sister-in-law, Linda Baker and husband, Peter. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Open Door Soup Kitchen, 32 Commerce Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
