Clyde-Charles Bryan Medford, Sr., age 80, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Wayne William and Fannie Mae Chambers Medford. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Janet Debruycker and a granddaughter, Wendy Leigh Murphy. He was an Army veteran of World War II and served in the Battle of the Bulge. He roomed with General Patton during a hospital stay and met Marilyn Monroe while she was there visiting the troops. While in service he was a champion boxer in his weight class, and at one time, Joe Lewis, laced up his gloves. He later was a self-employed farmer and loved horses, hunting, and fishing. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by four daughters, Bonita Joan Turner, and her husband, Bill, and Judith Elaine Scott, and her husband, Kenneth, both of Union, SC, Joyce Gail Gregory of Putman, SC, and Mary Ann Murphy and her husband, Robert Paul; four sons, Charles Bryan Medford, Jr. of Stedman, NC, Darryl Medford and Billy Wayne Medford and his wife, Barbara, both of Union, SC, and Wid Boone Medford of Akron, OH; four sisters, Ethel Stuart, and her husband, Norman, and Kathleen Muse, both of Clyde, Nancy Wells and her husband, Johnny, of Canton, and Beulah, Zunwalt, and her husband, Benny, of Deer Park, TX; three brothers, Robert Taylor Medford, and his wife, Gwen, Harold Hardy Medford, and his wife, Wilda, and George Jones Medford, and his wife, Linda, all of Clyde; 13 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 with Reverend Alan Davis and Reverend Glenn Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Randy, Gene, Delbert, Mike, Earl, David Paul, and Dean Medford, David Turner, and Robert, Kenny, and Kevin Scott.
