Charles Cable

The Reverend Charles Mattison Cable passed away at his home in Pisgah Forest on Thursday, November 5, 2009. He was 87 years old and born in Proctor, Hazel Creek, NC and was the son of the late Pat and Elva Crisp Cable. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ray Cable, as well as five brothers, Evan, Neil, Alfred, Bob, and Ben Cable. Reverend Cable graduated from Canton High School and served in the Army Air Force in World War II. He worked at Champion International for 30 years. Reverend Cable also served at the following Baptist churches in Haywood County as a full time minister: Sonoma Baptist Church, Mountain View Baptist Church, and James Chapel Baptist Church. Cable was instrumental in organizing the union at Champion Paper thus creating Local 507 of Pulp and Paper mill workers to which he was elected as its first president and served as president for consecutive terms. Cable also worked for the AFL-CIO until his retirement. He continued his ministry at Wyatt Grove Baptist Church in Salisbury, NC. After retirement, Reverend Cable volunteered much of his time to Shenck Job Corps in Brevard, assisting instructors and counseling the young people enrolled in the job corps program. Since retirement, he has been a member of the Pisgah Forest Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Javena Austin Cable, his children, Sandra Cable Hanes and her husband, George, of Sautee Nacoochee, GA, Dianne Cable of Spring Creek, Grover Cable and his wife, Nancy, of Chapel Hill, and Dr. Edward Cable of Denver, CO; as well as five grandchildren, Chris, Kevin, Andrew, Anna, and Ian Cable. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend W. O. "Bill" Henson officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, it is requested by the family that donations be made to Pisgah Forest Baptist Church, 494 Hendersonville Highway, Pisgah Forest, NC 28768, or to Boyleston Baptist Church, 9949 Boyleston Highway, Mills River, NC 28759.
