"Loving Husband, Father and Grandpa"

Canton, Charles John Carreño, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at his residence.

A native of Tampa, Florida he was the son of the late Aniceto Antonio and Beatrice Chodora Carreño; in addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Alverez. Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He retired as a lieutenant with the Tampa Police Department, whereupon moving his family to the mountains of Haywood County. After a brief retirement, Charlie went to work for the UNC Asheville Campus Police, eventually retiring as their Chief. He was an active 32nd degree Mason with the Sonoma Lodge #472 AF&AM loyally serving with his brothers for many years. Charlie was also a loving and proud grandfather and great-grandfather.

Charles is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia "Patsy" Carreño; daughter, Michelle Stevens, and her husband, Randy, of Lexington, Tennessee; three sons, Darrell Carreño, and his wife, Rhonda, of Hendersonville, Richard Carreño, and his wife, Kim, of Goose Creek, South Carolina and Kerry Carreño, and his wife, Anita, of Clyde; seven grandchildren, Marisa, Savannah, Hunter, Kate, Clay, Jessica and Brandon; three great-grandchildren, Skye, Lili and Mason.

A funeral mass will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father Julio Dominguez officiating. Burial with graveside Masonic Rites will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
