Charles Hannah

Clyde, Charles Willard Hannah, age 86, died on November 20th, 2015 at his home. Charles was born on February 26th, 1929 in Clyde, North Carolina and graduated from Clyde High School in 1947. He was proceeded in death by his parents Bill and Louise Hannah; a brother Dick Hannah; brother-in-law, Walter Wells and two infant sons. He served in combat as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army in Korea from 1948 to 1951. Charles graduated from North Carolina State University in 1960 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After working as an engineer with Johns Manville, he returned to the mountains and was employed by Dayco until his retirement. Charles was a dedicated family man and a loving father. He married Frances Gidney in 1953, and they had four children together. Charles loved the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman. He enjoyed camping, annual trips to Montana, and his favorite fishing spots at Cataloochee, Hazel Creek, and Walnut Bottoms. He was also a gardener who loved propagating and raising a variety of beautiful hybrid rhododendrons and azaleas and was a member of the Rhododendron Society. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, serving many years as an usher. He was also a life member of the Lions Club. As a result of his work with the blind, Charles received the Jack Stickley award naming him a Jack Stickley Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Services in North Carolina. He served on the Clyde Fire Department Board of Directors and also served two four- year terms on the Haywood County School Board. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Gidney Hannah, of Clyde; his daughter, Becky Hannah, of Candler; his son, Jeff Hannah ( Meg Hannah), of Chapel Hill, NC; his beloved grandson Jessy Hannah of Greenville, NC; sister-in-laws Lucille Hannah, Dorotha Gidney Wells, and Margaret Gidney Terrell; brother-in-laws, Bill Terrell and Charles Gidney; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. and Reverend Wilson Strickhausen officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until service time at the church. A private family burial will be at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery.
