Charles Herndon

Charles Norburn Herndon, age 83, died at his residence. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late George Washington and Verma Hooker Herndon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Buchanan Herndon, who died in 2003; a brother, George Everette Herndon; and a sister, Thomasine Hipps. He retired from Champion Paper & Fibre Co. with over 40 years of service and was a member of Abernethy United Methodist Church. After retiring from Champion, Norburn worked in sales for Lipton Tea for nearly ten years and was a United States Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. Norburn was a devoted husband and loving father. He is survived by a daughter, Shawn Penny and her husband, Roger, of Charlotte; one brother, DuRell H. Herndon of Moncks Corner, SC; one granddaughter, Rebecca H. Penny; and one grandson, Roger A. Penny, Jr. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 10, 2009 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Tony Sayer officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Abernethy United Methodist Church, 1418 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC 28806.
