Charles Hobbs

August 10, 1921 — May 8, 2012

Charles E. (Hap) Hobbs, age 90, died on Monday, May 7, 2012 at Homestead Hospice & Palliative Care of Haywood County. A native of Edinburg, Illinois, he was a son of the late O.B. and Lucy Fee Hobbs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his eldest son, William D. Hobbs who died in 2000, and a granddaughter, Melody Hobbs. The Hobbs family moved to Marshall, Indiana in 1938 where he graduated from high school in 1941. He married Dorothy Ann Stark on April 26, 1942. When he, his wife, and three sons moved to Sarasota, Florida in 1952, he became a building contractor and constructed many homes and businesses in the area. After partnering with his son, Joe, in Quality Concrete Construction, he designed and built cabinets. While living in Sarasota, he enjoyed fishing and bowling. After retiring in 1997, Hap and Dorothy moved to Canton where he continued woodworking and furniture building. They became members of Plains United Methodist Church in Canton. He is survived by his wife, of whom he celebrated 70 years of marriage in April, Dorothy Hobbs; two sons, Joe W. Hobbs and his wife, Laurie, of Canton, and Ronald L. Hobbs and his wife, Dianna, of Greensboro; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie E. Hobbs of Naples, Florida; two brothers, Jack Hobbs of Danville, Indiana, and James Hobbs of Marshall, Indiana; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at Plains United Methodist Church with the Reverend Ryan Snider officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Plains United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 42, Canton, NC 28716 or to Homestead Hospice & Palliative Care, 127 Sunset Ridge Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
