Charles Messer

March 11, 1935 — March 15, 2010

Clyde, Charles Edwin Messer, age 75, of the Crabtree community, died Monday, March 15, 2010 at Clare Bridge of Homewood in Greenville, SC. A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Jack and Folsom Leatherwood Messer. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Clark Messer, who died in 2009; a sister, Jackie Sue Rogers; and a granddaughter, Emma Caroline Jett. He was a US Army veteran and a Marine Reservist. Charles attended school in Haywood County and continued his education at the Riverside Military Academy and Duke University. Charles was a cattleman and retired in 2000 after 50 years as owner/operator of the Western Carolina Livestock Market. He was extremely active with the Cattlemen's Association on the state and national levels and was also involved with the Livestock Marketing Association. He was a member of Crabtree United Methodist Church. He is survived by one son, Dan Messer and his wife Kendra of Clyde; three daughters, Barbara Sue Parker and her husband Greg of Clyde; Jenny Jett and her husband Andy of Fayetteville, AR; and Judy Stewart and her husband Andy of Simpsonville, SC; 7 grandchildren; Blane Parker, Madeline Jett, Katie Stewart, Emily Stewart, Daniel and Tucker Messer and Olivia Noelle Messer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Crabtree United Methodist Church with Reverend Tim McConnell and Reverend Woody Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Dawn Memory Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Dan Messer, Greg Parker, Andy Jett, Andy Stewart, Jack Rogers, Jack Dusenberry and Darrell Guy. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the staff at Clare Bridge of Greenville, SC for the loving care they provided during the final months of Charles' life and also a special thanks to the wonderful staff at Maple Leaf Adult Day Care. Memorials may be made to N.C. Cattlemen's Association - Charles Messer Scholarship Fund 2228 North Main Street, Fuquay-Varina, N.C. 27526. This scholarship will be awarded annually to a western North Carolina student who is pursuing a career in agriculture.
