Charles Nichols, Sr.

September 28, 1931 — October 18, 2007

Canton - Charles Robert "Charlie" Nichols, Sr., age 76, of the Beaverdam Community, died Thursday, October 18, 2007 at his residence. He was a native of Macon County and a son of the late Homer Price and Myrtle Gray Nichols. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Gibbs Nichols, who died in 2005, and a brother, Homer "Nick" Nichols, who died in 1991. Mr. Nichols was employed by Honeywell as director of programming for 31 years when he retired in 1992 and was a member of Beaverdam United Methodist Church. He was a 1960 graduate of George Washington University earning a degree in law. He was a former police officer with the District of Columbia. Mr. Nichols gave of his time and participated in the relief efforts of the United Methodist Church. He was a United States Army veteran having served in Korea where he received a purple heart. He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Rae Konietzko and her husband, Mark, of Big Lake, MN, and Nancy Lee Alzate of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two sons, Charles R. Nichols, Jr. and his wife, Marcie, of Tampa FL, and Robert Price Nichols of St. Paul, MN; one sister, Jean Baldoni and her husband, Tom, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and four grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2007 at Beaverdam United Methodist Church with Reverend Tim Drum and Reverend Naomi King officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Army. Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to North Carolina Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Fund, 1722 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1722
