Crabtree-Charles Gaston Noland of 5561 Crabtree Road, Clyde went to be with the Lord September 12, 2005 at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was born on October 7, 1928 to his parents, the late Benjamin Jackson Noland and Susie Noland McKnight. He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Clement; two brothers, Howard and Jack Noland and two half-brothers, Jerry and Van Noland. Charles attended Crabtree Ironduff School, served in the Merchant Marines and retired from Dayco with 38 years of service. He was a member of Crabtree Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the Haywood Men's Democrat Club. Charles enjoyed working on the farm, raising cattle and helping his neighbors. His life reflected an excerpt from his favorite poem, "He lived in a house by the side of the road and was a friend to man." It was a joy for him to help others and his presence will be missed greatly by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lucy Noland; three daughters, Gail Noland, Rita Noland and Kathy Davis and her husband, Greg all of the Crabtree Community; two grandchildren, Kelsey and Caleb Jaynes; one brother, Homer Noland of Waynesville; five half-sisters, Bennie Lance and her husband, Ronnie, Judy Noland, Laurie Cagle and her husband, Kerwin, and Mari Allen all of Waynesville and Linda Rathbone and her husband, Larry, of the Fines Creek Community; four half-brothers, Walter Noland and his wife, Deann, Jeff Noland and his wife, Kim, all of Clyde, Ben Justice of Asheville and John Noland and his wife, Marianne, of Indiana. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Max Smith, Reverend Dennis Ruff and Reverend Gene King officiating. Burial will follow in the Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Pallbearers will be Alan, Johnny and Ray James, Bill Davis, Way Kinsland, Howard Campbell, Neal Justice and Robert Smith. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made in Charles' name to Alzheimer's Association, RESEARCH, 31 College Place, Suite 320, Asheville, NC 28801.
