Charles Payne

October 21, 1906 — March 16, 2010

Charles E. Payne, age 103, of 21 Crooked Trail, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Cambria, MI, he was the son of the late William Deforest and Mazie Carruthers Payne. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine LaFleur Payne and two sisters. Charles was a long-term member of the Congregational Church of Litchfield, MI. Charles served tours of duty on the east and west coasts, as well as in Hawaii. He retired from the Navy as a Captain. Upon retirement, Charles took an interest in gardening, carpentry, and fishing. Charles was a life member of Franklin Masonic Lodge #40 AF&FM for over 60 years. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Harry S. Kelley American Legion, and the Emeritus Club at the University of Michigan. He is survived by his wife of ten years, Barbara Black Payne, a son, Dr. Winston Payne and his wife, Ginny, of Asheville; a daughter, Josette "Jody" Payne of Boulder, CO; six grandchildren, Alyson Robinson, Lauren and Derek Payne, Heather Schuler, Julie and Todd Mallon; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas Robinson and Caitlyn. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Wells Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Canton.
