Charles Ray Jackson, affectionately known as Ray, 85, passed away on Friday, March 7, 2025, in his hometown in Haywood County, North Carolina. Ray was born on February 5, 1940, to the late Sam Jackson and Winnie Crawford Jackson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters and six brothers.
A proud Veteran, Ray served as a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, followed by service in the National Guard, embodying the values of patriotism, duty, and perseverance throughout his life. Ray spent his professional career with the U.S. Forest Service, working for 33 years as a ranger in the Pisgah National Forest District, where he specialized in surveying and land management.
Ray’s deep understanding and love for the land reflected his upbringing in Haywood County. He took pride in his education, having earned an associate degree from Mars Hill College and a bachelor of science degree in forestry from the University of Georgia.
A man who cherished the simpler things in life, Ray found great pleasure during retirement in spending time on his tractor, working his land, baling hay, and mowing. These hobbies provided him not only with relaxation but also a deep sense of connection to his roots and the land he loved. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Clyde, where he committed himself to his faith and the community for many decades.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Carol Latimer Jackson; two sons, David Jackson (Diane) and Jeff Jackson; three stepdaughters, Traci Minton (Len Russell), Meredith Porter (Richard), and Aimee Walters (William); 11 grandchildren, Amy, Catie, Jake, Connor, and Kiefer Jackson; Cody Clark, Ethan and Taylor Walters, Carleigh McKinley, Haley Elliott, and Jordan Heard; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ray leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and strength. He will be remembered not only as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather but also as a respected member of his community and a friend to many. His spirit will continue to inspire those who had the honor of knowing him.
Per Ray’s wishes, a private graveside service with the family will be held at a later date.
