Canton-Charles Henry Sloan, age 68, of 130 Rolling Acres Drive, died on Monday, May 29, 2005 at his residence. A native of San Antonio, TX, he was the son of the late Henry Lee and Minnie Meyer Sloan. He was the co-owner of Sloan's Bookshop. He earned his Masters Degree in Journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill. Charles worked as an associate editor of World Magazine, a division of National Geographic; wrote a regular column for The Enterprise Mountaineer, and was editor of the Friends of the Library Newsletter. He was a member of HAWA, the Waynesville Kiwanis Club, Haywood Arts Council, and the HART Theatre, where he served on the Board of Directors and as President. He also served as a Board of Director member of Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center in Asheville. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in the Mountains, serving as a vestry member and senior warden. He was a former member of the Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a Deacon. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Edith MacKinnon Sloan; one daughter, Meg Sloan Wilson and husband, Brian, of Lawrenceville, GA; two sons, Mark MacKinnon Sloan of Blowing Rock, NC and Andrew Charles Sloan and wife, Brenda, of the Cruso Community; one sister, Letty Mallery and husband, John, of Berryville, VA, and two grandsons, Patrick Thomas Wilson and Charles David Wilson. Memorial services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, June 2, 2006 at Grace Church in the Mountains with Reverend Howard White officiating. Interment will follow in the memorial garden at the church. The family will receive friends following the services at the church.
