Clyde-Charles Tillman Smith, Sr., 83, of 412 Harris Road died Sunday, February 23, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Greenville, SC and had lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late J. Luke and Carrie Ann Davis Smith. He was also preceded in death by 2 sons, James Lloyd and Billy Ray Smith, one daughter, Shirley Ann Smith and 10 brothers and sisters. He retired from Champion International in 1981 as a board check loader with 33 years of service. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he was also a deacon. He served several years on the board of the Haywood County Baptist Association and was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II serving as a 1st Class Gunner's Mate on a mine sweeper and a cook.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Hazel Hudson Smith, one daughter, Helen S. Edwards and her husband John of Chester, NH, one son, Charles Tillman Smith, Jr. and his wife Betty Jean Owenby of the Thickety Community, 5 grandchildren, Myrna E. Arnold, Brenda J. Seluta, Wendy L. Gillespie, Dr. Ruby Mae Edwards and Jammie Lee Smith and 2 great-grandchildren, Shae Elizabeth Gillespie and Justin Michael Gillespie.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 27, 2003 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Bruce Cayton, Reverend Kevin Garner and Reverend Jake Cagle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Homes of Canton. At other times the family will be at the residence, 412 Harris Road, Clyde, NC 28721.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC 28716 or to the American Heart Association, 310B Bennett Center Drive, Greer, SC 29650.
