Canton-Charles Edward Summey, age 67, of 202 Crossroad Hill, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a son of the late Howard and Ella Grooms Summey. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Ethel Elizabeth Stamey and one brother, Howard Eugene Summey. Mr. Summey was employed with the Town of Canton of 15 years until his retirement. He was a member of Canton Church of God of Prophecy and served his community as a Church of God of Prophecy minister. He was a devoted family man, NASCAR fan and an avid outdoorsman. His favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. Mr. Summey was a loving husband and father and will be missed greatly. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Hazel Ledbetter Summey of Canton, 3 daughters and their husbands, Diane and Alvin Lowe, Darlene and Bobby Burnette, and Linda and Kenneth Pruett, all of Canton, two sons, Michael Summey and his wife Glynis and Dewayne Summey, all of Canton, one brother, Jim Summey of Canton, 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 12, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with Reverend Vaughn Burnette and Reverend Anthony Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road in Canton. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Serving as pallbearers will be Joshua Burnette, Nathan Little, Bryan Payne, Michael Hall, Jacob Suttles and Mark Putnam.
