Charles Surber

Waynesville, Charles J. Surber, age 85, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2015 at The Homestead. A native of Bronx County, New York, he was a prior resident of Ft. Pierce, Florida and had resided in Haywood County for the past 20 years. He was the son of the late Charles and Gladys McCarroll Surber. Charles was a member of the National Guard and employed at Bell South for 25 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Charles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan Meagher Surber; two sons, John Surber (Lisa) of Sylva and William Surber (Christina) of Port St. Lucie, Florida; a sister, Barbara Herrmann, of New York; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church with Father James Cahill officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, March 30, 2015 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
