Waynesville, Charles "Charlie" Burr Way was born in Waynesville, NC October 3, 1926. He passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on September 9, 2013. Charlie was the son of the late Joseph Howell Way and Marguerite Sloan Way. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marietta Way Campbell and Martha Way Barber and one brother, Joseph Howell Way, III. Surviving are Hilda Way Brown and Marguerite Way Hyatt. Charlie is also survived by his wife of 61 years Mary Ann Massie Way of the home, son Charles "Chuck" B. Way, Jr. and his wife Cindy Green Way, daughter Linda Ann Way Manes and her husband Harry Manes of Waynesville; a daughter Harriett Way of Brevard, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A special thanks to Stephanie Messer and Kim May for their loving care. Charlie graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1944. He attended Duke University and after serving with the US Army in the Philippines during WWII, he returned to Duke and graduated in 1950 with a BA in Accounting. He was employed by the NC Department of Revenue and later by WM Russ and Company CPA in Raleigh. Charlie moved back to Waynesville in 1953 and was owner of The Toggery until 1981. After closing the Toggery, he had Way Appraisal Service until he retired in 1996. During his career, he served on the Waynesville Merchants Board, Northwestern Bank Board of Directors, Chamber of Commerce, Givens Estate Planning Board and the Board of Trustees. Charlie joined the Rotary Club in 1953 and was the longest serving member in the Waynesville Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville, where he served on numerous boards and committees on the local and national level and was a member of the Asbury-Wesley Sunday School Class. Charlie and Mary Ann chaired the church Pancake Day for 50 years. Charlie was an avid Duke Fan and supporter. He attended many football and basketball games throughout the years and was there for Duke win or lose. Duke will now have an opening for the position of #1 fan. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery with military rites by the National Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Henderson, Jim Stringfield, Jr., John Stringfield, Bob Mitchell, Fred McWhorter and Bob Massie. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be The Waynesville Rotary Club and the Asbury-Wesley Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Charlie and Mary Ann Way Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Waynesville is in charge of arrangements.
