Charlie Edgar Massie, age 85, of Hyder Mountain Road passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2011, at MedWest – Haywood. A native of Union County, South Carolina, he had resided in Haywood County most of his life and was the son of the late Charlie Americus and Lorena Rhinehart Massie. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Killian and two brothers, Joe and Retod Massie. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II with eight years of service. Charlie was a former employee of General Motors – Cadillac Division and owned and operated Massie Esso/Exxon from 1959 – 1991 in Canton and Clyde. He attended Woodland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Pauline Arrington Massie; two sons, Keith Massie and Charles Kevin Massie and his wife, Teresa, all of Clyde; three sisters, Naomi Cole and her husband, Ormond, of Leicester, Lois Robinson of Canton, and Hilda Faye Cox of Greenwood, SC; a brother, Henry Earl Massie and his wife, Rose, of Los Banos, CA; two grandchildren, Charity Nicole Massie of FL and Mitchell Keith Massie of Clyde; three step-grandchildren, Natasha Conley of Canton, James Lee Conley of Clyde, and Josh Dockery of Franklin; and a step great-grandson, Braydon Coleman Massie. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at Woodland Baptist Church with Pastor Alan Davis officiating and military rites following. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
