Chief Evans

September 27, 1926 — April 26, 2003

Waynesville-Chief Arthur Paul ''A. P.'' Evans, age 76, of 48 Pisgah Drive, died Saturday morning, April 26, 2003.

He was born in Monticello, Georgia and was the son of the late Harry Willis and Annette Smith Evans. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Evans, Jr.

He was a graduate of Waynesville Township High School, a graduate of the FBI Academy 69th Session, a graduate of the FBI Narcotics School, and attended Western Carolina University.

Before being appointed Chief of Police for the Town of Waynesville, a position he held for 18 years, he served as a policeman for the town for 15 years. He was the first Drivers Educational Teacher for the Haywood County Schools. He served as Waynesville Interim Town Manager for two and a half years. He served as credit manager for Massie Furniture Company for several years.

He served for three years in the Marine Corps during WWII and one year in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was chairman of Southwestern Law Enforcement and Rights Services for two years and was the chairman of Waynesville ABC Board for eight years. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville, serving in various committees and was an active usher.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorotha Martin ''Dot'' Evans; a son, Paul Martin Evans of Waynesville; a daughter, Dr. Ila Evans Baugham and her husband Dr. Leonard A. Baugham of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Ila Jean Yount, of Waynesville; a brother, Gary Evans, of Smithfield, Virginia; three grandchildren, Leigh Baugham, Andy Baugham and Kim Evans.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at the First Baptist Church of Waynesville. The Reverend Dr. Robert Prince will officiate. Burial will be at Green Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2003 at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.

The pallbearers will be the members of the Town of Waynesville Police Department and James Wood, Tom Alexander and Bobby Suttles.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville, P.O. Box 690, Waynesville, NC 28786.
