Muriel Christine Clark Mathews, age 79, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Laura Gosnell Clark. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Patsy Clark and Margaret Thomason. She was a member of Canton Freewill Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for a great number of years and was also very involved with Vacation Bible School. She was known as a devoted prayer warrior keeping her Christian faith at the center of her life. She loved her family dearly, always placing them first in her life. Christine also loved flowers and enjoyed collecting knick-knacks from their various travels throughout the United States. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Harold Mathews; a daughter, Jennifer Mathews Sheehan and her husband, Douglas, of Canton; a son, Gary Phillips and his wife, Patricia, of Canton; three sisters, Betty Reese of Canton, Violet Massey of Waynesville, and Judy Pollard and her husband, Steve, of Clayton, NC; a brother, Melvin Clark of Canton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Canton Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverend Jeremy Cagle and Reverend Brian Bird officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Enka-Candler. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
