Waynesville-Christopher Lloyd "Moose" Massie, age 32, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005 after fighting a courageous battle with melanoma. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Lloyd Massie of Florence, Alabama and Robert and Patricia Howard Caldwell of Canton. He received his BS in Business Management from Western Carolina University in 1998 and was employed by Volvo in Construction Equipment Sales. He was a US Army veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division and a member of Hazelwood Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of seven years, Eva Janice "E.J." Owens Massie; two sons, Kelly Christopher and Daniel Joseph Massie, both of the home; a brother, Richard Todd Massie of Canton; maternal grandmother, Jean Howard of Canton; and paternal grandmother, Lena Massie, of Florence, Alabama. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 21, 2005 at Hazelwood Baptist Church with Reverend Don Letzring officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in the Bethel Community. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Wells Funeral Homes and Cremation Services of Waynesville and at other times, the family will be at the home. Serving as pallbearers will be Todd Massie, Marty and Joe Owens, K.C. Howard, Chris Rich, Scott Ray, Chad Haynes, and Kevin Presnell. Honorary pallbearers will be D. J. Hughes, Steve Brown, Heath Sutton, Greg Owens, and Danny Pleasant. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Chris Massie Children's College Fund, c/o Mountain 1st Bank and Trust, 1637 S. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
