Clara Mccracken

Waynesville-Clara Mae Rogers McCracken, age 94 died Monday, October 6, 2003 at her residence.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Hipps Rogers. She was the wife of the late Jack Phillip McCracken who died in 1969. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, seven brothers and one granddaughter, Elaine Garland Rogers. She was a teacher with the Haywood County Schools and first taught at a one room schoolhouse in Crabtree. She rode a horse to get to school. Mrs. McCracken loved quilting and gardening and was a former member of the Home Demonstration Club. After she married she worked as a teacher's aide and substitute teacher. Mrs. McCracken was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

She is survived by four daughters; Joan Garland of Waynesville, Pat Axelrod and Helen McCracken, both of Skyland, Jackie Liner of Hendersonville, three sons and their wives; Donald and Reba McCracken of Bethel, Reverend Larry McCracken and Madge of Maiden and Neal and Jean McCracken of Canton, one sister; Lorena Duckett of Clyde, a special friend, Doris Clarke, 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Larry McCracken officiating. Burial will follow at Crabtree Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Joan Garland, 4912 Pigeon Road, Waynesville, NC 28786. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
