Clara Palmer

Waynesville - In the peaceful early morning hours of Monday, July 1, as a soft rain ended and the morning was dawning, a loving wife, a beloved mom, a wonderful mother-in-law, a maw, a mamaw, a sister, an aunt, and also a friend, who was known to so many as Clara-Belle, departed her earthly home at Homestead Hospice Center and entered into her Heavenly home at the age of ninety-seven. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, Clara was born August 26, 1915 to the late John and Maude Evans in the Cove Creek Community of Haywood County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her beloved husband, of 55 years. Kimsey Palmer, who died in 1998. She is also preceded in death by a sister, Willa Scow and two infant brothers, Ralph and Frank Evans. Clara worked for Dayco for several years and then later was employed at Haywood County Hospital where she worked as a nurse's aide for 25 years, retiring in 1996. Clara was the oldest member of Antioch Baptist Church where she had been a member since 1927, a total of 86 years. She is survived by a son, Nolan Palmer and his wife, Eugenia (Gina) , of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Melissa Parris (Mark) of Bethel, William Palmer (Amy) of Savannah, Georgia, and Stephen Palmer (Carla) of White Oak; three great grandchildren, Jessica Parris, Sidney Parris, Jacob Palmer; and one great-great granddaughter, Parris Webb, that will be born in August. She is also survived by a sister, Ruth Jones of Hendersonville and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Antioch Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 3rd at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Ted Reeves, Reverend Steven Taylor, and Reverend Larry Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
