Canton-Clara Mae Chapman Stamey, age 79, formerly of 48 Fiberville Street, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and had been a resident of the Brian Center in Waynesville for the past 4 ½ years. She was a daughter of the late Haywood and Rebecca Robinson Chapman and was also preceded in death by a great-great-granddaughter, Kelci Hannah, 3 brothers, James, Jack and John Chapman and a sister, Sally Thompson. She was a member of the Canton Presbyterian Church where she worked with the youth group and was a choir member. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Maxie L. Stamey, one daughter, Judith Ann Robertson and her husband Larry of Williamston, SC, two sons David Joe Stamey and his wife Denise of Clyde and Darryel Stamey of Canton, two sisters Mickey Ann McElrath of Black Mountain and Dortha Williams of Asheville, 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 18, 2005 at the Canton Presbyterian Church. Reverend Beverly Brock and Reverend Dr. Riley Covin will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9:45 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of David Joe Stamey, Ratcliff Cove Road. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1275, Canton, NC, Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Bldg, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or to a charity of one's choice. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements.
