Clarence Baker

April 6, 1936 — April 5, 2008

Waynesville, Clarence Jerreld Baker died Saturday, April 5th, 2008 in Jacksonville, Florida. Raised in Haywood County, "Jerry" was the son of the late Selma Burnett Black and the late Bryan Octavious Baker. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bryant Richard Baker and son Thomas Jeffrey Baker. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed. He was an electrical engineer, a graduate of N.C. State and an avid basketball player. He had a varied career, spending many proud years working in the space program at Cape Canaveral. He got his contractor's license and spent a number of years building houses, and finished his career primarily working in construction engineering consulting firms. He split his time in the last five years between Jacksonville, and his favorite place, the mountains of western North Carolina, in Hazelwood, enjoying the summers there. His greatest passion in life was golf and his family would like to think of him perfecting his drive in heaven. He is survived by his sister Mary Carver of South Daytona Beach, Fl. and four children: Michael Baker of Miami, Fl, Julie Schonfeld of Redwood City, Ca.; Pamela Baker of Cincinnati, Oh., and John Baker of College Station, TX; and many grandchildren as well. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2008, at the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral home. The family will receive friends from 11am until 1 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Gwyn Cemetery in Cruso.
