Clarence Stephenson, age 87, of Hickory, died Friday, October 5, 2007, after a short illness. He was a native of Bryson City and a resident of Haywood County for over 40 years. He was the son of the late John and Hattie Hayes Stephenson, and was also preceded in death by his daughter, Edith Stephenson;3 sisters, Bertha Payne, Juanita Ball, and Lena Watson; and 2 brothers, Willard and Arnold Stephenson. He retired from Cronlands Warproll Hardware after 15 years of service as a truck driver. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Sunny Point Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Winifred Stephenson; 3 daughters, Louise Stephenson of Canton, Lillian Huffman and her husband Homer, of Hickory and Frances Rathbone and her husband Ronnie, of Lincolnton; a son, Bobby Stephenson of Lincolnton; a sister, Marie Adams of Bryson City; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2007 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Bill Terrell and Reverend Charles Stephenson officiating. Burial will follow at Inman Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Inman Chapel Cemetery Fund, 2310 Lake Logan Rd., Canton, NC 28716.
