Tignall, GA, Claude Earl Johnson, age 89, formerly of Haywood County, died February 26, 2010 at Heritage Health Care of Wilkes County, GA. He was a native of Avery County and was the son of the late Alfred P. and Jeanette Early Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Brackett Johnson, who died in 1993; a sister, Mildred Johnson, an infant brother and brother-in-laws, Guy Clark and Ray Wood. Claude was a Navy veteran of WWII, where he saw action in the Pacific Theater. He was co-owner of Johnson and Johnson Saw Mill, owned and operated Johnson Grocery in Cruso and was a retired maintenance supervisor with the NC DOT. He was dedicated to his work as a farmer and raising cattle. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing and valued the relationships he built with friends who hunted in and around his community. He was very fond of all animals, especially his dogs. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Wood; nephews, Tommy Clark and his wife Kathy and Kirk Clark; great-nephews, Tim Clark, Jeremy Clark and his wife Beth and their children, Isaac, Abby and Aaron Clark all of Bethel and a sister-in-law, Jewell Morgan of Tignall, GA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Homes with Reverend Roy D. Cates and Reverend Don Stiles officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Dorothy Wood, 4 Lily Lane, Waynesville, NC 28786.
