Claude Lee Pless, Jr., age 80, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 21, 2006 following an extended illness. He was a native of Haywood County and after working on many projects throughout the country, he came back to reside in Haywood County in 2000. He was the son of the late Claude Lee Pless, Sr. and Helen Rogers Pless Smathers. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Christine Pless Parker and three brothers, Edward and Charles Pless and Willard Poston. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and a United States Marine veteran in the 1st Marine Division and fought on Guadacanal during World War II. He is survived by a daughter, Claudia Lee Ashmore and her husband, Bill of Detroit, MI; a son, Claude Lee Pless, III of Las Vegas, NV; a sister, Margaret Brown of Candler; two grandchildren, Aaron Ashmore and Lindsay A. Hale and her husband, Tom as well as a special niece, Vicki Ball. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Virgil Holloway officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence of Margaret Brown, 9 Parkview Drive, Candler.
