Clyde-Claude Joseph Shelton, age 88, went home to be with the Lord with his family by his side on Monday, November 20, 2006 at the Brian Center. A native of Del Rio, Tennessee, he had previously lived in Madison County, but had lived in Haywood County for the past 50 years. He was the son of the late James William and Carrie Jane Gregory Shelton and was also preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Geneva Plemmons Shelton, who died in 1988; four brothers, Sherrill, Oakley, Seldon, and Otis Shelton; and one sister, Estlee. He retired from Asheville Waste Paper Company and was employed by the Town of Clyde in the Maintenance Department. Claude enjoyed farming and gardening and was an avid outdoorsman. He also loved to hunt and fish with his sons and family. Claude had a special love for his dog, "Toy." He is survived by Bertie Robinson; three daughters, Lorene Wood, Sue Sharp and her husband, Jimmy, and Darlene Rogers and her husband, David, all of Waynesville; two sons, Earl Shelton and Edward "Ed" Shelton and his wife, Sandy, both of Waynesville; three sisters, Mildred Suttles, Rosemary Foster, and Margaret Rathbone, all of Marion; two brothers, Dean and Clyde Shelton, both of Marion; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 22, 2006 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Lee Brooks and Reverend Johnny Swanger officiating. Burial will follow at Woody Cemetery, in the Spring Creek Community of Madison County. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service, and at other times, at the home of Ed Shelton, Pinnacle Drive, Waynesville and Lorene Wood, Victory Street, Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will grandsons, Dewayne and Shane Sharp, Steve, Mike, and Kim Wood, Keith and Kelly Rogers, Trey Sherrill, Taylor Ledford, and Mark Shelton. A special thanks to the staff of the Brian Center for the care they gave to Claude, especially Buddy. And also we wish to thank Bea Hoglen and Dawn at Autumn Care Nursing Home as well as Waynesville Family Practice and Dr. John Stringfield for his care for the past 30 years.
