Clay Pegram Scott, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the age of 91. Born in Haywood County on October 19, 1933, Clay lived a life marked by humility, quiet strength, and deep family values.

He dedicated much of his professional life to sales, starting with his tenure as a Sales Representative with Bell-Sysco before continuing his career at Davis Furniture Company. Clay’s colleagues and customers alike appreciated his soft-spoken demeanor and unwavering commitment to service. Beyond his career, he was known for his contentment and resilience, particularly during his last three years at Pigeon Valley, where he received loving care from those around him.

A devoted member of Beaverdam Baptist Church, Clay embedded himself into the fabric of his community, sharing his faith and kindness with those he encountered. His personality reflected a man who never complained and always sought to uplift others around him.

Clay will be deeply missed by his family, who continue to celebrate his legacy. He is survived by his three sons, Jeffery Scott (Renee) of Canton, NC, Gary Scott (Lori) of Granite Falls, NC, and Phillip Scott of Tennessee. In addition to his sons, Clay leaves behind eight grandchildren: Jody Scott, Jeremy Scott, Mandy Jones, Krista Quentero, Kindley Scott, Westin Scott, Tabitha Scott, and Storm Scott. His six great-grandchildren, Mesha, Donavan, Gunner, Oaklyn, Chase, and Devin, will carry forward his memory.

Clay was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley Ballew Scott, whose companionship he cherished throughout their lives together. He was also preceded by his grandson, Kelly Scott. He was the last surviving member of a family of eleven children, having lost his beloved parents, Arthur and Essie Wilson Scott, as well as his four brothers—Mark, Calvin, William, and Gomer Scott—and six sisters—Artie Worley, Dorothy Cody, Bonnie Hall, Jennie Parham, Bernice Scott and Thelma Worley.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4, 2024 at Beaverdam Baptist Church with Reverend Gene Worley and Reverend Barry Clark officiating. Burial will follow at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the church.

As we reflect on the life of Clay Pegram Scott, we remember a man of gentleness and grace, whose love for his family and community will resonate in the hearts of those he touched. His legacy lives on through his children and their families, ensuring that the values he upheld will continue to guide future generations.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beulah Baptist Church – Ruth Dayton Manna Foodbank at 483 Sunset Circle, Canton, NC 28716.

The care of Mr. Scott has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
