Clyde Mehaffey

March 24, 1927 — March 13, 2012

Waynesville, Clyde Hampton Mehaffey, age 84, of Pink Dogwood Lane, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Autumn Care Nursing Home. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Dock and Lois Smathers Mehaffey and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Tracy Mehaffey; one granddaughter, Maria Mehaffey, two sisters, Dixie Ensley and Louise Shelton; and one brother, Bud Mehaffey. He was owner of Clyde Mehaffey Concrete and Finishing Company and a member of Balsam Baptist Church. Clyde served in the US Marines during World War II and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mabel Downs Mehaffey; one daughter, Delia "Dee" Sluder and her husband, Dean, of Arden; three sons, Dewey Mehaffey and his wife, Cathy, of the Bethel Community, Billy Mehaffey and his wife, Debbie, of Clyde, and Steve Mehaffey and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesville; one sister, Barbara Anderson and her husband, Roger, of Canton; two brothers, Richard Mehaffey and his wife, Beverly, of Jackson County and James Mehaffey and his wife, Dottie, of Hazelwood; 13 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. James G. Mackey officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliffe Cove Cemetery with military services conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve and Dean Mehaffey, Jeffrey and Patrick Sluder, Nathan Buchanan and Judd Trull. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
