Canton, NC-Colonel James S. Wittman, Jr. PhD, of Silverbluff Drive, died on Monday, September 4, 2006. A native of Williamsport, PA, he was the son of the late James and Martha Pfirman Wittman. Colonel Wittman retired from service after 38 years, having served in Europe during World War II as a 1st and 2nd Army Lieutenant. He attended Cornell University where he received his BS, MS, and PhD. He was a professor of Sociology at Louisiana College, West Georgia College and Western Kentucky University. He was past lieutenant governor of Kiwanis and very active in the Presbyterian Church and the community in which he lived, including the Boy Scouts where he received the Silver Beaver Award. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Olive Ardelle Wittman; three daughters, Margaret Langdon of Townsend, DE, Ruth Sharpton and her husband, Dr. Bennie Sharpton of Waynesville, and Bette Harlow and her husband, Dr. Gary Harlow of Bethlehem, PA; three sons, James Wittman III and wife, Tueny of Louisville, KY, Robert Wittman and wife, Melissa of San Antonio, TX, and William Wittman of wife Mitzi; two brothers, Franklin Whitman and his wife, Betty, of Placerville, CA and Harry Wittman and his wife, Kathryn, of Mountoursville, PA; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. Military funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2006 at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Dr. Gary Harlow and Reverend Dr. Robert Prince, Jr. officiating.
