Waynesville-Crayton Ruben Childress, age 84, of 89 James Loop Road, Ratcliff Cove, died on Friday, August 26, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Jackson County, he had lived most of his life in Haywood County and was the son of the late Van Spurgeon and Ernie Stewart Childers. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one sister, Thelma Bryson, and four brothers, Morton, Duane, Lynn, and Frank Childers. He was employed by Dayco Corporation and retired after 39 years having worked in the Mill Room. He was a member of Ratcliff Cove Baptist Church. Crayton loved his family most of all and also enjoyed working outside, fishing, and watching football. Crayton had an outgoing spirit and enjoyed sharing humor with his numerous friends. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Georgia Grant Childress; one son, Alan Jeffery Childress, his wife, Gail, and their son, Travis Alan Childress, all of Waynesville; two sisters, Alta Bryson and Irene Moses, both of Candler; and two brothers, Charlie Childers of Cullowhee and Clell Childers of Arden. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, 2005 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jay T. Jones and Reverend Bill Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at Ratcliff Cove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. on Sunday prior to the service. Serving as pallbearers will be Ronnie Childers, Tim Freeman, Terry Green, and J. L., Lyndon, and Lyle Childers. Memorials may be made to the Ratcliff Cove Baptist Church, 1300 Ratcliff Cove Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
