Lake Junaluska resident Curtis Allen Chapman II passed away at age 73 on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. Curtis was raised in Macon, Georgia. He earned a BFA degree from La Grange College, then an MFA in Visual Arts from the University of Georgia. In 1967, he married Daphne Lee Murph, and they moved to Waleska, Georgia where Curt began his 45-year career as Professor of Art and chair of the Division of Fine Arts at Reinhardt University. He won many NEH grants to further his studies at universities including Johns Hopkins, University of IL, NY State University. He was a Rotary Scholar in England, which enriched his love of English history and architecture. A highlight of his career at Reinhardt was the design and building of the Fincher Visual Arts Center. At retirement in 2006, he became Professor Emeritus. Curtis is survived by Daphne, his wife of 49 years; son, Christopher Allen Chapman (Lynn); daughter, Carrie Anne Chapman Willingham (Dr. Thomas Willingham); brother, Bennett Chapman (Carlotta); step-mother, Florence Chapman; and grandchildren, Barrett, Meredith, and Elizabeth Willingham, and Ethan and Amelia Chapman. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. Reverend Sanford G. Giles will officiate. Memorial gifts may be sent to The Curtis Chapman Art Scholarship at Reinhardt University, Lake Junaluska Foundation or First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.
