Waynesville, D A Whitner, age 85, of Grandview Circle, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2014 at Silver Bluff Village. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Lawrence Dewey and Martha Jane Conner Whitner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Parton Whitner; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Whitner; four sisters, Elizabeth Shelton, Annie Mauldin, Kay Grasty and Hillis Whitner; and one brother, Joe Whitner. D A retired from the Town of Waynesville where he was the Superintendent of the Water Treatment Plant for 30 years. He was an accomplished master carpenter and enjoyed following his children in their sports participation and was a member of Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church. D A is survived by a daughter, Betty Jo Bridges of Clyde; three sons, Roger and Terry Whitner and his wife, Brenda, of Waynesville and Bryan Whitner and his wife, Roberta, of Canton; three sisters, Mary Lee Creasman, Vergie Inman and Estella Arrington and her husband, Albert, all of Waynesville; a brother, Robert Whitner, of Lake Junaluska; three grandchildren, William Scott Nelson of Asheville, Shana Whitner of Cherokee and Mitchell Whitner of Waynesville; and five great-grandchildren, Delaney Ann and Eric Nelson, Kirsten and Kade Trantham and Addison Mason. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Bobby Downs and Reverend Charlie Creasman officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home and at other times, at the home of Bryan Whitner in Canton.
