Daisy Hurley

January 10, 1904 — December 11, 2004

Canton - Daisy Burnette Hurley, age 100, died Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native of Haywood County where she lived most of her life and the daughter of the late Jesse Albert and Florence Wilson Burnette. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Hurley in 1994 and a son, James A Hurley in 1997. Also, preceding her in death were a brother, Joe L. Burnette and three sisters, Genevieve Roberts, Gertrude Campbell and Lucille Conder. Surviving are two sons, Richard B. Hurley of Asheville and Patrick A. Hurley of Atlanta; two brothers, Albert Burnette of Canton and Dick Wilson of Asheville and a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Hurley of Atlanta. She graduated from Canton High School where she was the school's first cheerleader. Following graduation, she attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh. She was employed by Champion Paper and Fibre Company in the Accounting Department while operating Daisy's Tea Room on Main Street in Canton. She was a contributing writer of the company's magazine, The Log. She wrote a weekly column in the Canton Enterprise called "Muddy Shoes" featuring stories about gardening, which was a lifelong hobby. She was a National Council Flower Show Emeritus Judge and taught flower arranging at Haywood Community College. She was a former president of the Canton Garden Club, a lifetime member of Garden Clubs of North Carolina and a member of the Canton Homemakers' Club. She was a member of the Canton Beautification Committee and served as a member of the Canton Planning Board. She served as a Den Mother for Pack One of the Canton First Methodist Church and was a past president of the North Canton Elementary School PTA. In 1963, she obtained her broker's license and started Hurley Realty Company, which she maintained until her 90th birthday. She was a founding member and past president of the Haywood County Board of Realtors. She was a charter member of the Canton Business and Professional Women's Club. She managed the Royal Shoe Store in Canton and played with a local bridge club, The Midnighters, for over 50 years. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Canton. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2004 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Carrol Lindsey officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
