Lake Junaluska-Mrs. Dallas Holland Mathis, of Harrell Drive, died Sunday, April 6, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.
A native of Macon County, she had resided most of her life in Haywood County. She was the daughter of the late B. H. and Lula Russell Holland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Larry Mathis and a brother, Clell Holland. Her family was a pioneer family of Maggie Valley.
She was a former owner and operator of Red Wing Gift Store in Waynesville and had also owned and operated Bradley Gift Shop and Motel and Mt. Valley Lodge in Maggie Valley. She was also a real estate broker and a former member of the board of directors of Western Carolina Bank. She was also a former member of the Waynesville Merchants Association and was in charge of the Christmas parade for many years. She was instrumental in organizing the Joy Bridge Club at Lake Junaluska, and was a member of the Waynesville Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She received her nurses training at Highland Hospital in Asheville and Duke University, and she was a Second Lieutenant Registered Nurse serving in the US Army during World War II. She was a member of Waynesville First Baptist Church.
She is survived by two sisters, Alaska Pressley of Maggie Valley, and Grace Rhinehart of Lake Junaluska; a brother, Wilson Holland, of Lake Junaluska; a special niece, Pat Holland Messer and her husband, Harold Dean of Waynesville as well as a great number of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend David Reeves and Reverend G. W. Jamison officiating. An Order of Eastern Star Service will also be conducted in conjunction with the funeral service. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens with military graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the funeral home, and at other times, the family will be at the home of Grace Rhinehart, 22 Harrell Drive, Lake Junaluska.
