Dalton Paxton

February 14, 1924 — October 8, 2003

Canton-Dalton Reid Paxton, age 79 of 68 Poplar Street, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

He was a son of the late John M. and Janie Fares Boyd Paxton and was also preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hemby Paxton who died January 9, 2003. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Paxton was a United States Army Veteran of World War II having served in the North African and Italian Campaigns. He was a part-owner and manager of WWIT for 16 years and had also been employed by Canton Laundry. He was also a real estate agent in Haywood County. Dalton had been president of the Canton-Bethel Chamber of Commerce, President of the Greater Haywood County Chamber of Commerce, President of Canton-Bethel-Clyde United Way, President of the Canton Lions Club, President of the Canton Merchants Association, vice president of the Community Disaster Agency and was a founding charter member and past president of the Pisgah High School Activities Committee.

He is survived by one daughter and her husband, Mary and John Holcomb of Boiling Springs, SC, one sister, Janie Lou Barefoot of Douglasville, GA and one brother, David Paxton of Seattle, WA and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2003 at Canton First Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Rick Gosnell officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements.
