Daniel "Buck" Cogdill

Daniel Phil Cogdill, a proud veteran of the United States Army, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Jesse and Francis Flemming Cogdill.  He was also preceded in death by three sisters Ethel Matney, Agnes Moody, Mary Alice Nelson, and a brother James Cogdill.  He was born November 18, 1947 and attended Tuscola High School.  He was a member of Louisa Methodist Church in Clyde.

At the age of 18, Daniel was drafted into the United States Army where he served one year in Vietnam.  He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Sergeant.  As part of this service, he had the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, 2 Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Sharpshooter (m-60MG and M-14), and a Marksman on a M-16.

He worked at the American Enka Plant/BASF 35 years until the plant closed and at Haywood County Schools until he retired. 

He enjoyed spending his time coaching and watching his children and grandchildren play sports and dancing.  He also loved to travel with his family, seeing all 49 states.  He enjoyed sitting on the front porch and watching the birds and squirrels.

Daniel is survived by his wife Doris Palmer Cogdill of 56 years.  He is also survived by one son Danny Cogdill of the home, three daughters Diana (Marlow) Gates of Sandy Mush, Cicely (Jacob) Leatherwood of Canton, Danita Cogdill (Stanley Hannah) of Waterville, NC.  He has one granddaughter Alexis Cogdill, four grandsons Corbin and Jayton Gates, Zachary Cogdill and Isaiah Leatherwood and one granddog Lily.  He has a sister Lucille Smith, and a brother Robert (Mary) Cogdill.  Several Nieces and Nephews.  He has two great special Vietnam friends Edward Belzano of Selden, NY and Preston Webb of McHenry, MS.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024, in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Johnny Passmore and Reverend Davis Hooper officiating.  Burial will follow with Military Honors at Green Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Friday, January 12, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.    

The family of Daniel would like to thank Hospice of Haywood, Charles George VA Medical Center and the neighbors.
